Sermon Follow-Up: God’s Goodness

Pastor Drew continued to speak on the bigness of God this past Sunday by emphasizing His infinite goodness. He provided Psalm 145 as a helpful text for us to learn how the Lord knows all, sees all, and provides for all with the power of His hand. Psalm 145:16 says, “You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.” The Bible speaks often of God’s hand. The pagan king Nebuchadnezzar had his “sanity” restored and uttered the incredible words, “no one can hold back his hand or say to him: What have you done?” (Daniel 4:35). Moses reflects on the goodness of God who delivered his people from the oppression of Pharaoh and establishes the consecration of the firstborn male. When the sons ask why this is happening, they are to respond, “With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt” (Exodus 13:14). David speaks of salvation which comes from “the power of his right hand” so that he will no longer “trust in chariots and horses” (Psalm 20:6-7). Ezekiel extols God’s goodness to his creation by proclaiming that God “withholds his hand from doing wrong and judges fairly between man and man” (Ezekiel 18:8). Ultimately, we see God’s goodness by the piercing of His only son’s hand on the cross.
I can often times be heard saying to the students, “He’s got ya.” That simple phrase is a tremendous daily reminder that we are in the very hands of God. Who can snatch us away? Who can thwart His hand? Jesus teaches of his infinite goodness and power when he comforts all believers by saying, “I give them eternal life and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28). Rest today in the goodness of God and know that He isn’t going anywhere. He will still be right there with you in 5 minutes, in 5 days, and in 5 years. And He won’t let go.
